FJATA is working on behalf of its members to ensure a promising future for our industry. 2010 was a challenging year for the fashion jewelry and accessories businesses. Our industry has been targeted by consumer groups, federal and state legislators, and regulators – but FJATA is working hard to distribute the real facts about our industry and the products we are proud to provide consumers.

With the help of its legal, lobbying and media relations capability in Washington, DC and state capitals, the FJATA works on behalf of retailers and suppliers to develop and promote safe standards for fashion jewelry and accessories. We stand up for members of our industry when they come under attack from the media or hostile interest groups.

Here’s a sample of activities that FJATA leadership has conducted on our members’ behalf:

  • Develop new industry standards for heavy metals including the ASTM Children’s Jewelry Safety Standard completed 2011.
  • Visit numerous state legislatures and testify at committee hearings on behalf of the industry concerning legislation on heavy metals in jewelry including presenting New York with our proposed cadmium bill that became SB4055.
  • Work with various industry groups, (MJSA, JA, JVC, ASTM, CPSC) on industry-wide issues.
  • Educate officials at various federal agencies such as the Consumer Products Safety Commission on safety issues.
  • Meet with Members of Congress and staff on issues of concern to the industry.
  • Implement a media relations campaign to educate journalists and respond to inaccurate news stories with op-eds, letters-to the editors and one-on-one interviews.
