FJATA is pleased to report that we have produced a video documenting the recent success in RI regarding children’s jewelry safety. RI S. 2482 and RI H. 7652 passed almost unanimously in the legislature, and in the video you will see Governor Chafee signing the resulting act, the Comprehensive Children’s Jewelry Safety Act, into law in the state.
The Comprehensive Children’s Jewelry Safety Act is designed to protect children from all known hazards in jewelry, such as cadmium, lead, magnets, liquids-filled items, and choking hazards. The Act requires jewelry manufacturers in Rhode Island to follow the guidelines presented in an ASTM document, ASTM F2923-11, the Standard Specification for Consumer Product Safety for Children’s Jewelry.
FJATA supports sensible standards for children’s jewelry. As you will see in the video, many states have enacted different laws covering the product category, which creates a financial burden on manufacturers. The Comprehensive Children’s Jewelry Safety Act, as passed in RI, is part of the effort to harmonize state and federal jewelry guidelines so that manufacturers are not faced with a moving target regarding compliance.
